WHEN DOES A "QUICK FIX" TURN INTO A WEEKEND PROJECT?

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, sometimes I feel like all the prep in the world can’t save you from a 40-year-old house’s “quirks.” Last month I tried to swap out a light fixture - should’ve been a 20-minute job. Ended up discovering ancient knob-and-tube wiring hiding behind the drywall. No amount of sniffing for weird smells or checking switches would’ve tipped me off. I’m all for being careful, but sometimes you just have to accept you’re rolling the dice with old houses.

Seriously, is there a secret “quirk generator” hidden in the basement or something? I thought painting a bedroom would be easy - next thing I know, I’m patching mystery holes and finding wallpaper under the paint. Prep helps, but I’m convinced some stuff just waits until you’re mid-project to show up. Anyone else feel like their house has a sense of humor?
