How tricky is too tricky when fixing modern gadgets?

Totally feel your frustration there.

"Had to dig through three toolboxes just to find a screwdriver that fit."

Reminds me of the time my solar panel inverter decided to flash some cryptic error code. Thought I'd just pop open the cover and reset it, but nope... needed some weird hex key I didn't even know existed. Took me forever to find one buried in my garage. Standardizing parts would seriously save us all so much hassleβ€”and probably money too. Seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it?

Had a similar experience with my green roof irrigation system last summerβ€”needed some obscure wrench size just to adjust a simple valve. Felt like a scavenger hunt through my shed. Standardizing would definitely make life easier... but doubt manufacturers will ever get onboard with that.

I get the frustration, but do you really think standardizing tools across manufacturers would solve the issue? I mean, even if they did agree on a few common sizes, wouldn't we still run into specialized fittings or valves that need something unique? I've worked on plenty of green roofs and irrigation setups, and honestly, sometimes the weird wrench sizes are there because the valve or fitting itself is designed for a specific pressure or flow requirement. Standardizing might limit innovation or force compromises in design.

Maybe instead of pushing for standardization, manufacturers could at least clearly label or include the necessary tools with their products. Ever notice how some brands toss in a cheap plastic wrench or key? Sure, they're flimsy, but at least you know exactly what you need. Wouldn't that be a simpler fix than trying to get everyone on the same page?

That's actually a solid middle ground. Clear labeling alone would save me from countless toolbox dives... especially during storm repairs when every minute counts. Good thinking.

Clear labeling would def help, but honestly I'd rather they just toss in the tool. Nothing worse than finally finding the right screwdriver head only to realize it's stripped or worn down from last year's project. And let's be real, if I'm already shelling out cash for some fancy gadget, a tiny wrench or screwdriver isn't gonna bankrupt the manufacturer... right?
