How tricky is too tricky when fixing modern gadgets?

Haha, totally relate to the "warm enough" and "not freezing" settings. I once spent half a Saturday trying to set up a smart sprinkler system that promised to adjust watering based on weather forecasts. Sounded great until it decided my lawn didn't need water during a heatwave because rain was "predicted"... spoiler alert: it never rained. Sometimes simpler really is better, or at least give us an easy override button!

Yeah, I get the frustration, but isn't part of the appeal of these smart gadgets that they learn and adapt over time? Maybe your sprinkler just needed more data to make accurate predictions. Did you check if there was a sensitivity setting or something similar? I wonder if tweaking those settings could've helped avoid the whole "phantom rain" fiasco... or are these systems just not quite there yet?

True, but honestly, how much "data" does a sprinkler really need? Reminds me of the time I installed one of those fancy weather-sensing skylights for a client. It kept closing randomly on sunny days because it detected "rain"β€”turned out it was just pollen triggering the sensor. Sometimes tech tries a bit too hard... maybe there's a sweet spot between smart and simple we're still missing?

Had something similar happen when we got one of those smart thermostats. Thing kept insisting it knew our schedule better than we didβ€”turning itself way down in the middle of winter because it decided we were "usually away." Took a few chilly mornings before I gave up and switched it back to manual. Tech's great and all, but sometimes simple just works better...

Had a similar experience with some newer roofing techβ€”like the automated attic ventilation fans. They claim to detect humidity and temperature automatically, but sometimes they trigger at odd times or don't activate when you actually need them. Ended up bypassing the "smart" settings and just setting manual thresholds myself. Tech has its place, but honestly, straightforward controls often get the job done without headaches or surprises...
