I totally get it - last month I thought swapping out my dishwasher hose would be a 20-minute thing. Ended up crawling around for hours, cursing at stripped screws and mystery leaks. Is there some trick to figuring out when a repair is actually simple, or is it always a gamble? Anyone else have a supposedly “easy” job spiral out of control?

I've been patching up my roof here and there for a few years now - nothing major, just replacing a few shingles, sealing leaks, cleaning gutters, you know, the usual homeowner stuff. But lately I've noticed the shingles are looking pretty brittle and worn out. Last weekend I climbed up there again and honestly felt a bit uneasy about it. The shingles were cracking way easier than before, and the surface felt kinda slippery even though it was dry.

Here's what I've been doing so far: checking for loose or missing shingles every spring, replacing damaged ones with new shingles (matching color is a pain btw), sealing around vents and chimneys with roofing caulk, and clearing debris regularly. But now I'm wondering if there's like a point where DIY just isn't safe or smart anymore? Like how do you know when your roof's too old or fragile to keep patching yourself?

Curious if anyone else has run into this issue or has better ways to judge when it's time to call in the pros.

Nothing major, just some scratches and a small dent. I checked online, and it seems like I could probably fix it myself with one of those DIY kits. But then again, I pay insurance premiums for a reason, right?

Thing is, I'm worried if I file a claim, my premiums might go up or it'll be more hassle than it's worth. On the other hand, I'm not exactly Bob the Builder here... last time I tried DIY repairs, let's just say things didn't exactly go according to plan, haha.

Curious if others have been in this spot - did you end up going through insurance or just rolled up your sleeves and tackled it yourself? Would love to hear how it turned out either way.
