If you’ve got Atlas shingles and live somewhere humid (I’m in Georgia, so yeah, algae is basically a neighbor), here’s something that’s worked for me: Scotchgard. I know, sounds like something for your couch, but the version for roofing actually helps keep those ugly black streaks away. I had my roof done two years ago with the Scotchgard protection, and honestly, it still looks way cleaner than my neighbor’s—he skipped it and now his roof looks like a science experiment.

It wasn’t a huge upcharge either, which surprised me. I just made sure to ask the installer for the Scotchgard option when picking out my shingles. Not saying it’s magic or anything, but it does seem to slow down the grossness.

Anyone else tried this or found other ways to keep algae at bay? I’ve heard copper strips work too, but haven’t tested that myself. Curious what’s working for folks in other climates.

I mean, durability-wise they both seem pretty solid, but I'm mostly hung up on the looks. Our house has this sorta traditional-but-not-too-old-school vibe, and I want something that'll match nicely without looking too cookie-cutter, you know? Anyone have experience with either brand in terms of aesthetics or curb appeal? Would love some real-world opinions before I pull the trigger...

I'm knee-deep in researching shingles for our roof replacement, and honestly, I'm about ready to pull my hair out. Narrowed it down to Tamko and Atlas, but every time I think I've made up my mind, I stumble across another horror story or glowing review that flips everything upside down again. Tamko seems solid at first glance, but then I read about warranty nightmares and granule loss issues. Atlas looks promising with their algae resistance and supposedly better warranty, but then someone pops up saying their shingles curled after just a few years.

I mean, come on...is it really this complicated? Feels like I'm stuck in some endless loop of indecision. My roofer says both are fine, but that's not exactly helping me sleep at night. Curious if anyone else has been stuck in this same shingle limbo or if I'm just overthinking the whole thing.

Just saw a local news segment yesterday talking about how roofing materials, especially Atlas shingles, have jumped up in price quite a bit over the past year. They interviewed a homeowner who was pretty shocked when he got his estimate—said it was way higher than what his neighbor paid just a couple years back. I mean, I knew inflation was hitting everywhere, but didn't realize shingles were getting hit that hard too.

I've been thinking about redoing our roof sometime soonish (it's getting up there in age), but now I'm kinda second-guessing if we should wait it out a bit. Wonder if prices might come down eventually or if it's one of those things that'll just keep climbing? Curious if anyone else caught that segment or noticed similar price hikes lately.
