Stainless has been my go-to too, especially after seeing what happened to the copper nails on my old shed - total mess after just a couple years. I get what you mean about the price, but honestly, I’d rather not have to climb up there and swap out corroded fasteners every few seasons. Haven’t tried composite yet, though. I hear you on that - composite just seems like one of those “sounds good on paper” things until you actually see it last through a couple rough winters. Stainless is pricey, but at least you know what you’re getting. I’ll admit, sometimes I look at the price tag and think, “How bad could galvanized really be?” Then I remember the mess on my garage roof from last year... not worth it.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had composite up for about five years now - northern climate, lots of freeze-thaw - and it’s holding up better than I expected. No cracking or weird warping yet. Stainless is solid, sure, but the price is wild. Galvanized didn’t survive two winters for me... rust city. Composite isn’t perfect, but it’s not just hype either.

That’s been my experience too. I was skeptical at first - figured composite would get brittle or fade after a couple years, especially with all the snow and ice we get. But honestly, it’s handled the freeze-thaw cycles better than some of the “tougher” materials I’ve tried. Stainless is great, but yeah, the price tag made me wince. Did you notice any issues with installation? I found composite a bit trickier to cut cleanly, but once it was up, it’s been pretty much maintenance-free. I’m curious if you’ve had to do any touch-ups or repairs over those five years, or if it’s just been smooth sailing. Sometimes I wonder if the newer composites are even better than what I put up a few years back.

Cutting composite is definitely a pain - blades dull faster, and I’ve had some edges chip if I rushed it. But once it’s up, I barely think about it. Five years in, no touch-ups needed here, just the occasional rinse. I do think the newer stuff’s improved, especially with UV resistance. Still, nothing’s truly maintenance-free long-term... but composite’s been way less hassle than metal or wood for me.
