Choosing between attic fan setups: roof or gable mount?

That’s pretty much what I ran into when I tried solar fans in my last place. They worked great on sunny days, but once the clouds rolled in, attic temps crept right back up. I get wanting the hybrid, but honestly, splitting up the fans was still better than nothing. At least you didn’t have to mess with extra wiring or deal with an electrician. Sometimes you just gotta work with what fits the budget and space, even if it isn’t perfect.

I ended up going with a gable-mount fan because I didn’t want to cut into my roof—just seemed like asking for leaks down the road, especially since my shingles are already getting up there in age. I get what you mean about the solar ones though. I tried a cheap solar kit first, but honestly, it barely made a dent unless it was blazing outside. Wiring up the gable fan wasn’t fun, but I felt better knowing it’d kick on even when the weather was iffy. Not perfect, but it keeps the upstairs a lot less stuffy.

I’m in the same boat with old shingles—mine are probably pushing 18 years, so I just couldn’t bring myself to cut into the roof either. The gable fan seemed like less risk and a lot cheaper if you’re handy with basic wiring. I did look at those solar fans too, but unless you shell out for a high-end one, they’re pretty underwhelming. Still, sometimes I wonder if the energy savings from solar would add up over time... but if it barely moves air, what’s the point? For now, gable mount just feels like the safer bet, especially if you’re watching your budget and don’t want to mess with roof penetrations.

I get the hesitation with cutting into old shingles, but honestly, I went with a solar roof fan last year (mid-range, not top dollar) and it surprised me. It’s not a wind tunnel, but it keeps the attic way cooler than my old gable fan ever did. Plus, no extra electric bill. If you’re in a sunny spot, might be worth a second look—even the mid-tier ones have gotten better lately.

That’s interesting—my uncle swears by his old-school gable fan, but he’s in a pretty shaded spot, so maybe that’s why he never bothered with solar. I’m curious, did you notice any difference in noise between the two? The gable fan at my place rattles like crazy when it kicks on, and I’m wondering if the roof mount types are any quieter. Also, did you have to mess with extra venting or just swap the fan itself?
