Ice dams are more about attic insulation and ventilation than what’s covering your vent pipes.

Couldn’t agree more with this. I remember one winter, we swapped to these “ice-proof” boots thinking it’d solve our icicle nightmare. Didn’t make a dent. It was only after we beefed up attic insulation and sealed some air leaks that things improved. Metal boots have been great for keeping out raccoons, though—those little guys chewed right through the old rubber ones. But for ice dams? Boots just aren’t the fix, in my experience.

Funny you mention raccoons—had a similar run-in with squirrels last year. They tore up the old rubber boots, but the metal ones have held up since. As for ice dams, I chased that rabbit hole for years. Tried swapping boots, adding heat cables, even those fancy “ice shields.” None of it mattered until I finally got serious about attic air sealing and insulation. The difference was night and day. Boots are great for critter control and leaks around the pipe, but they’re not gonna stop ice from building up along the eaves if your attic’s leaking heat.

- Totally agree, sealing up the attic made way more difference for me than any amount of boot swapping or heat cables ever did.
- I used to think those “ice shields” were the magic bullet… turns out, not so much if you’ve got warm air leaking up there.
- Metal boots have been solid against critters here too. Squirrels chewed through my old rubber ones in a single season—lesson learned.
- If anyone’s still fighting ice dams, I’d say focus on insulation and air leaks first. Boots are just one piece of the puzzle.
- Honestly, swapping boots with the seasons felt like putting a band-aid on a bigger problem. Once the attic was sorted, everything else got easier.

- Gotta agree, attic air leaks are the real culprit most of the time.

“swapping boots with the seasons felt like putting a band-aid on a bigger problem.”
—that’s been my experience too.
- Metal boots are tougher, but if your insulation’s lousy, you’re still chasing leaks and ice.
- I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on heat cables and fancy boots, but their attics are basically saunas in winter… not much those boots can do then.
- Still, I’ll say rubber boots are easier to swap if you’re dealing with weird seasonal expansion, but it’s not a long-term fix.

Yeah, I’m with you—if the attic’s leaking air, swapping vent boots is just treating the symptoms. I tried the seasonal swap thing a couple years back (rubber in spring, metal in fall), but honestly, it didn’t make much difference until I dealt with the insulation and sealed up some gaps. My house is older, so it was basically a wind tunnel up there. Once I got that sorted, the boots stopped cracking and leaking as much anyway. Heat cables are pricey and feel like overkill unless you’ve got a real ice dam problem.
