I’ve got a similar situation with a steep roof and tons of debris—mostly pine needles in my case. I looked into those gutter guards too, but after reading reviews and seeing how they can actually trap more stuff, I passed. The shingle grit thing is weird though. After last spring’s hail, I noticed a lot more in the gutters than usual. Is it just normal for older roofs to shed more granules after storms, or could it be a sign the shingles are about done? I’m not sure if I’m overthinking it or if it’s time to start budgeting for a replacement.

Had the same thing happen after a gnarly hailstorm last year—looked like someone dumped a bag of aquarium gravel in my gutters. From what I’ve seen, some grit loss is normal as shingles age, but if you’re seeing a LOT after every storm, it might be your roof’s way of waving the white flag. Mine lasted another year or two after that, but I definitely started budgeting for a replacement. Those pine needles don’t help either... they’re like tiny saboteurs.

I’ve seen a lot of older roofs drop granules after storms, but if you’re noticing big piles every time, it’s probably more than just normal wear. Out of curiosity, has anyone actually had luck with those gutter guards keeping debris and grit out? I’m skeptical they do much for the tiny stuff.

I’ve got mesh guards on mine, and honestly, they’re great for leaves but not so much for the granules. After a big storm, I still see that sandy grit in the gutters. Maybe it slows it down a bit, but it doesn’t stop it. Has anyone found a type that actually blocks the fine stuff?

I’ve tried both mesh and the foam inserts. Mesh is better for big stuff, but like you said, the grit still gets through. Foam clogged up fast for me—ended up being more hassle than it was worth. Haven’t seen anything that truly keeps out all the granules, especially after heavy rain. Maybe it’s just part of the deal with asphalt shingles?
