Ridge vent alone doesn’t do much if there’s no fresh air coming in at the eaves. Think of it like trying to drink from a straw with your finger over the end—just doesn’t work.

That straw analogy is perfect. I learned the hard way—my attic was roasting every summer until I finally cleared out the soffits. Took a leaf blower to the vents and found a squirrel stash in one. Never thought I’d be evicting acorns from my roof, but here we are...

- Clearing soffits is underrated—most folks forget about those vents until the attic turns into a sauna.
- Squirrels love roof spaces... seen a few nests tucked right behind baffles during inspections.
- Ridge vent only does its job if air can actually move—blocked soffits = zero airflow, no matter how fancy the ridge system.
- Worth checking every spring and fall. Leaves, nests, spiderwebs... it all piles up faster than you’d think.

Clearing soffits is one of those things I used to skip, honestly. Figured it wasn’t a big deal until last summer—attic was roasting, AC couldn’t keep up, and my electric bill shot up. Pulled down a bunch of old insulation and found a squirrel stash blocking half the vents. Not fun. Now I just add it to my spring checklist. Doesn’t take long, saves me money, and keeps critters out.

That’s the way to do it. People underestimate how much blocked soffits mess with airflow—seen way too many folks with sky-high cooling bills just from that. Good on you for catching it before it did real damage.

That’s a good point—soffits get overlooked way too often. I used to just focus on the shingles and gutters, but after I found a bird nest blocking one vent, I make it a habit now. Makes a big difference in the attic temps, especially once summer hits.
