Guess sometimes old-school works, even if it’s not pretty.

Honestly, I’ve seen more issues caught by folks poking around themselves than with any app or drone photo. There’s just no substitute for getting up close—especially on smaller roofs where you can actually reach every corner. I do wish tech would catch up, but until my phone can sniff out soft spots, I’m with you on the muddy jeans and splinters. Just watch your footing... those “mushy plywood” surprises are no joke.

I’m with you—nothing beats actually crawling around up there, even if it means a few bruised knees. I’ve seen drone pics miss cracked flashing or those weird little dips you only feel underfoot. Anyone else ever step right through a “solid” spot? Not fun...

- Crawling up there myself saves a ton—no drone or pro fees, but yeah, my nerves are shot every time I hear a creak.
- Did you find patching those dips is even worth it, or does it mean bigger trouble?
- Anyone tried those cheap moisture meters before pulling up shingles? Just wondering if they’re actually helpful or just another gadget...

I gave one of those budget meters a shot last fall—honestly, mixed results. It flagged a spot as “wet” but when I lifted the shingle, it was bone dry. Maybe operator error, or maybe just not sensitive enough for older roofs? Curious if anyone’s had better luck with pricier models.

About patching dips—I’ve seen a couple cases where it hid bigger rot underneath. Ever found a dip that was just cosmetic, or is it always something lurking below?

Those cheap meters are hit or miss in my experience. I’ve used a couple on jobs and sometimes they’ll light up like crazy, but when you actually check under the shingle, it’s dry as a bone. I think they’re okay for a quick check, but I wouldn’t trust them for anything serious—especially on older roofs where the layers can mess with the reading.

As for dips, I’ve seen both. Sometimes it’s just a cosmetic sag from old decking, but more often than not, there’s some rot or at least soft wood underneath. Had one last spring that looked minor, but once we opened it up, half the sheathing was mush. Never hurts to poke around a bit more if you spot a dip.
