I’m trying to understand when synthetic roof underlayment is worth the extra cost under asphalt shingles compared with traditional asphalt-saturated felt.

From what I’ve read, synthetic underlayment can be easier to handle, less prone to tearing or wrinkling, and better suited to a roof that may be exposed before the shingles go on. That seems useful if weather delays are likely or the roof is large enough that installation will take time.

But if the shingles are installed promptly on a fairly straightforward roof, does felt usually do the same job for less money? Is the bigger factor roof pitch, local weather, how long the underlayment might be exposed, or simply how the crew handles it during installation?

Also, are there any product-specific limits on exposure time that homeowners should check before choosing one?

Trying to figure out if I really need that little metal strip along the edge of my roof - think it’s called a drip edge? I’m in the middle of getting quotes for a new roof (asphalt shingles, pretty standard suburban house, Midwest weather with lots of rain and snow). One contractor said it’s super important, another seemed to think it’s optional if you have good gutters. I’m honestly confused.

Is this thing just a money grab or does it actually help keep water out? Anyone have issues with leaks or rot because they skipped it? I’d rather not cut corners if it’s going to bite me later, but also don’t want to pay for stuff I don’t need. Any stories or advice from folks who’ve dealt with this would be awesome.

So, I recently had to get my roof redone after a pretty nasty storm. First time homeowner here, and honestly, I had no idea what the heck the roofing guys were talking about half the time. Felt like they were speaking another language, you know? Flashing, soffit, fascia... sounded more like fancy pasta dishes than roofing terms to me.

Anyway, after nodding along cluelessly for a couple days, I stumbled across this online glossary thing that explained all these roofing terms in plain English. Seriously, it was like a lifesaver. Suddenly I knew exactly what the roofer meant when he said my "flashing was compromised" (turns out it's not as scandalous as it sounds, lol). And now I actually understand why they recommended certain materials and methods.

But it got me thinking - am I the only one who had no clue about this stuff? Like, is it common knowledge and I just missed the memo? Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience or if I'm just embarrassingly behind on homeowner lingo...
