Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?

I get the whole surge protector thing, but I’ve always wondered if we might be overthinking it a little. My place has a metal roof and, honestly, I haven’t noticed any more issues with lightning than when I lived under asphalt shingles. Maybe it’s just luck or maybe it’s that the metal actually helps disperse the energy? I did have an electrician double-check the grounding when we moved in, which probably helps my peace of mind more than anything. Still, I guess if you’re in an area that gets hammered by storms, extra protection can’t hurt... but for me, grounding seemed to do the trick.

Funny enough, I used to think a metal roof was just asking for trouble during storms, like waving a lightning rod at the sky. Turns out, you’re right - if the grounding’s solid, it actually helps channel the energy safely. I’ve seen more fried electronics in old farmhouses with sketchy wiring than in newer places with metal roofs. Out of curiosity, do you notice any difference in noise during heavy rain or hail? I had the same worry when we bought our place last year - metal roof, lots of trees around, and I kept picturing lightning just zapping right through the house. Turns out, the first thing I noticed wasn’t lightning at all, but how LOUD rain sounds on metal. The first big storm, I actually got up in the middle of the night to check if a branch had crashed through. Nope, just rain... and my nerves.

I did some reading (and bugged my inspector) about the lightning thing. Apparently, metal roofs don’t attract lightning any more than other materials, but they do a better job of dispersing it if you’ve got proper grounding. Still made me nervous enough to double-check everything in the breaker box.

Noise is still a thing for us - especially hail. We haven’t added insulation yet, but it’s on my “maybe someday” list. The insurance discount was a nice surprise though, so maybe that’ll help offset any upgrades down the line.
