Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?

“I’d be more concerned about that 1970s wiring or the giant oak tree leaning over your house than the roof material itself.”

Yeah, totally agree—the wiring and trees are way riskier. I’ve never had insurance balk at my metal roof. Actually, my premium dropped a bit since metal is more fire-resistant. The lightning thing’s mostly myth unless you’re in a super stormy area.

Metal roofs and lightning get lumped together a lot, but honestly, the science just doesn’t back up the fear. Metal actually helps disperse the energy if your house does get hit, and it’s not any more likely to attract a strike than asphalt or tile. I’ve seen more issues from old aluminum wiring or trees falling during storms than anything related to the roof material. Out here in the Midwest, insurance companies seem to prefer metal for hail and fire resistance. Only thing I’d double-check is grounding—if you’ve got a lot of electronics or sensitive equipment, it’s worth making sure your system’s up to code. Anyone ever had a direct strike cause actual roof damage? I haven’t run into it yet...

I get the logic, but I’m still a little wary. Maybe it’s just the old-school stories I heard growing up, but I’ve actually seen a neighbor’s barn with a metal roof take a direct hit and the wiring inside got fried. The roof itself barely showed a mark, but the surge did real damage to appliances. Grounding helps, but I wouldn’t say there’s zero risk—especially in places with crazy storms. I’d rather over-prepare than end up replacing half my electronics.

That’s a fair point—metal roofs aren’t magic shields. I’ve seen a few houses where the roof took the hit and the surge still found its way to the TV or fridge. Ever looked at whole-house surge protectors? Not a cure-all, but they can help. Storms here get wild, so I get the urge to overdo it.

Exactly—seen a few folks surprised when their fancy new roof didn’t stop a surge from frying their router. I always tell people, “Metal roof or not, lightning’s gonna do what it wants.” Whole-house surge protectors are like seatbelts… not perfect, but you’ll wish you had one when things get wild. Ever had to explain to a tenant why their fridge is toast after a storm? Not my favorite conversation.
