Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?

That’s wild about the cable box—lightning’s so unpredictable. I always wonder if a metal roof actually helps spread out the charge or just makes you more of a target. Have you looked into how insurance companies treat metal roofs for lightning claims? I’ve heard mixed things, but it seems like they’re safer than people assume.

Metal roofs get a bad rap with lightning, but honestly, they’re not the magnets people think they are. The metal actually helps disperse the charge, so you’re less likely to have a fire compared to wood shakes or asphalt. Insurance companies I’ve dealt with don’t usually penalize for metal—sometimes you even get a discount for fire resistance. Still, every policy is different, and some adjusters just don’t know the science. I’d say you’re probably safer than most folks assume, but it never hurts to double-check your coverage.

I used to think metal roofs were basically lightning rods too, but after working on a few installs and seeing how they’re grounded, it’s not really a big deal. My uncle’s place got hit by lightning once—he had an old wood shake roof, and the fire was a nightmare. Metal just takes the hit and spreads it out. I’d still check with your insurance, though. Some folks just don’t get it and might try to hike your rates for no reason.

Had the same worry when I switched to metal a few years back. We get some nasty storms here, and I figured I was just asking for trouble. Turns out, the installer explained how the roof actually helps by spreading the charge instead of catching fire like my old cedar shakes. Haven’t had any issues since. Insurance did ask a bunch of questions, but my rate didn’t change. Honestly, I’d be more worried about leaks than lightning at this point.

I get where you’re coming from. When I put a metal roof on my place, I was more worried about hail and noise than lightning. We get some wild storms here too, but honestly, the old asphalt shingles were way more of a fire risk. Haven’t noticed any difference with insurance either. If anything, I’m just keeping an eye out for leaks around the fasteners—those seem like the real headache over time.
