Is it true tile roofs are basically maintenance-free?

- Tile roofs aren't exactly maintenance-free, but they're not always a headache either.
- Had mine for about 15 years now—only had to replace a few cracked tiles after storms, nothing major.
- Metal roofs sound great, but the upfront cost can be pretty steep if you're on a tight budget.
- Composite shingles might curl eventually, sure, but they're affordable and repairs are straightforward.
- Honestly, every roof type has trade-offs...just gotta pick what fits your wallet and tolerance for occasional fixes.

I've been following this thread because I'm in the same boat—budget's tight, and I'm trying to figure out if tile roofs are worth the extra upfront cost. Good to hear your experience hasn't been too rough. My neighbor has tile, and he's always saying it's pretty low-key, but I did notice him up there after a big storm last year replacing a couple tiles. He didn't seem too bothered though, said it was easy enough to handle himself.

Personally, I've got composite shingles right now. They're affordable, sure, but I've had my share of curling edges and minor leaks over the years. Nothing catastrophic, but enough to make me curious about other options. Metal roofs sound awesome in theory, but yeah...that initial price tag is intimidating.

Guess you're right—every roof has its quirks. It's reassuring to hear tile isn't a constant headache, though. Makes me think it might be worth considering when replacement time rolls around.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread too since I'm in a similar situation. My folks had tile roofing on their place for years, and honestly, it was pretty solid overall. But I do remember after one nasty hailstorm, my dad spent a weekend up there replacing cracked tiles. Wasn't a huge deal, but definitely not "maintenance-free." Still, compared to the constant little annoyances I've had with shingles, tile seems way more manageable long-term...just gotta stomach that upfront cost somehow.

- Yeah, tile roofs definitely aren't "set-and-forget" from what I've seen.
- Curious though, did your dad have trouble finding matching tiles after the hailstorm?
- Heard that can be a bit tricky sometimes...

Tile roofs aren't exactly hassle-free, but honestly, matching tiles isn't usually the biggest headache. My neighbor had hail damage last year, and he found replacements pretty quick. The real pain was reinforcing the underlayment—costly surprise there...
