Is it true tile roofs are basically maintenance-free?

"regular drone checks combined with occasional attic inspections might save you from another 'surprise attic waterfall' moment"

Haha, been there—nothing wakes you up faster than water dripping through the ceiling at 3 AM. Drones are handy, sure, but I've found they sometimes miss subtle stuff like loose mortar or hairline cracks. Ever tried binoculars from ground level to spot issues? Not as fancy as drones, but surprisingly effective if you're patient enough... Curious if anyone else has had luck with simpler methods?

Totally agree with this. I've been using binoculars for years—cheap, reliable, and no batteries needed. Sure, drones are cool, but sometimes simpler is better. Plus, binoculars let you spot things drones might overlook, like tiny cracks or shifted tiles. Saved me from a few headaches already... Glad I'm not the only one going old-school here.

- Glad someone mentioned binoculars... just bought my first house and was about to splurge on a drone, haha.
- Borrowed my dad's old binoculars instead—worked surprisingly well for spotting loose tiles after a storm.
- Definitely not maintenance-free though, learned that the hard way. Had a couple tiles shift after heavy winds, nothing major but still needed fixing.
- Agree drones seem cool, but honestly, simpler is better for me right now. Plus, no worries about crashing expensive tech into my neighbor's yard...
- Appreciate the tips here, makes me feel less clueless as a newbie homeowner!

Tile roofs being maintenance-free is definitely a myth, glad you're figuring that out early. I mean, they're sturdy and all, but nothing's totally hands-off when it comes to homeownership. Good call on skipping the drone—binoculars are way cheaper and less stressful if something goes wrong. Honestly, keeping things simple usually saves money and headaches in the long run... learned that lesson myself after a few pricey "upgrades" turned into expensive regrets. You're doing fine, trust me.

Yeah, tile roofs being maintenance-free is definitely wishful thinking. They're tough, sure, but I've seen my fair share of cracked tiles and sneaky leaks over the years. Honestly, I think the whole "maintenance-free" thing is just marketing hype—nothing in homeownership ever truly fits that description.

I do agree binoculars beat drones for quick checks, but have you considered just climbing up there yourself occasionally? I know heights aren't everyone's thing (definitely not mine at first), but once you get comfortable with it, there's no substitute for a close-up look. Found a few minor issues early that way and probably saved myself some serious cash down the line.

Anyway, good on you for questioning this stuff early—wish I'd been as skeptical before I bought into some of those "miracle" upgrades... expensive lessons learned!
