thinking about splurging on better roofing—worth it or nah?

I recently went through this exact dilemma. Initially, I thought investing in premium shingles would automatically mean fewer headaches down the road. But after talking to neighbors and doing some research, I realized installation quality is crucial. Ended up choosing mid-range materials but spent extra time vetting contractors—checking references, past projects, even visiting a couple of their previous job sites. So far, no regrets... roof's holding up great through some pretty rough weather.

Premium shingles aren't just marketing fluff, though. While I agree installation quality is critical—no argument there—higher-end materials typically offer better resistance to UV damage, algae growth, and granule loss. Mid-range shingles can perform well, sure, but in my experience, premium options often have reinforced layers or better sealing strips that genuinely extend lifespan. Still, your point about contractor vetting is spot-on; even the best shingles won't save a poorly installed roof... seen that firsthand too many times.

Good points all around, especially about installation quality. Curious though, have you looked into eco-friendly premium shingles? Some of those options offer similar durability perks plus sustainability benefits... might be worth checking out before you decide.

Fair point, but from what I've seen, some of the eco-friendly shingles still lag behind traditional premium options in extreme weather resistance. Had a neighbor who went green with their roof—looked great and all—but after a nasty hailstorm, they had more damage than others nearby. Maybe it's improved since then... anyone have recent experience with durability on these sustainable shingles?

Yeah, that's a good point—eco-friendly shingles have come a long way, but durability can still vary quite a bit. I've inspected a few roofs recently with newer sustainable shingles, and while they're definitely better than before, traditional premium shingles still edge them out in severe weather conditions...especially hail.
