Had a bit of an adventure recently trying to navigate the maze that is IBC roofing codes for commercial buildings. Had to use this compliance guide software thingy at work—RoofNav, anyone else used it? At first glance, seemed pretty straightforward, but man, once you dive in... layers upon layers of details and exceptions. Felt like I was decoding some ancient manuscript or something, lol.
I mean, it did help eventually—got me through the project without major hiccups—but I still felt like I was missing something half the time. Like, is it just me or do these codes seem overly complicated sometimes? Curious if anyone else has tried RoofNav or similar tools and found them helpful or if you ended up just as confused as me.
I feel your pain on this one. Never had to deal with RoofNav specifically, but last year when we redid our garage roof, I thought I'd be smart and look up the local building codes myself. Big mistake. What started as a quick check turned into hours of clicking through PDFs and trying to decipher language that might as well have been written in another century. Seriously, who writes these things?
Eventually, I just ended up calling the city office and asking them directly—felt kinda silly at first, but they were surprisingly helpful and explained stuff way clearer than the official docs ever did. Sometimes I think these codes are intentionally confusing just to keep us DIYers humble, lol. Anyway, glad you made it through your project in one piece...sounds like you earned a break after that!
