How much cleanup should be required before signing the roofing completion form?

During the final walkthrough, how strict should a homeowner be about cleanup versus documenting minor items for follow-up?

I’m thinking of a checklist that separates safety-critical issues - exposed fasteners, loose flashing, unsealed pipe boots, blocked gutters, attic debris, or nails around walkways - from cosmetic items such as a few missed shingle scraps or small granule piles. It seems reasonable to require the first group to be corrected before signing off, while recording the second group on a written punch list with a completion date.

Would you also wait for the roofer to provide final photos, permit signoff details, warranty paperwork, and confirmation that ridge ventilation and attic insulation were left intact? I’d appreciate hearing how others balance being thorough with avoiding delays over genuinely minor cleanup.

The written punch list is especially useful if each item has a photo and a location reference, such as “north eave above the driveway” or “left side of the rear dormer.” That removes ambiguity about which missed shingle scraps, granule piles, or flashing detail were being discussed.

I’d keep that signed list with the final invoice and completion paperwork, then mark each item with the date it was corrected. For safety issues like exposed fasteners or blocked gutters, I’d still want correction before signing completion. For minor cleanup, a documented list with a clear completion date gives both sides a record without holding up the entire closeout.
