Yeah, I get what you mean about the HRV cost—felt like a hidden fee for “modern living.” Makes me wonder, though, shouldn’t builders be including better ventilation from the start? Or is it just about hitting those energy codes and calling it a day...

Totally feel you on the “hidden fee” thing. When we built our place, I thought I was being smart by focusing on insulation and windows—then bam, HRV shows up on the bill like some kind of surprise party guest. It does seem like builders are just checking boxes for code sometimes. You’d think with all the tech and “green” talk, they’d just design homes to breathe better from the get-go.

Honestly, I get why codes are strict (energy bills aren’t getting any cheaper), but it’s wild how airtight these new places are. My old house was drafty but never had stale air or mystery condensation on the windows. Now I’m running gadgets just to keep things fresh... progress, right? Anyway, you’re not alone in thinking it should be standard. Feels like we’re all beta testing “modern living” sometimes.

That “surprise party guest” line made me laugh—HRVs really do just show up on the bill, don’t they? I see it all the time: folks think they’re getting a super-efficient home, then end up running machines just to keep the air from feeling stale. It’s wild how we’ve traded a little draftiness for a science experiment in air quality. I get the push for energy savings, but sometimes I wonder if we’re just sealing up problems we didn’t have before. The old houses had their quirks, but at least you didn’t need a manual to breathe.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing. My last place was a drafty 60s ranch—never had to think about air getting stale. Now in my “tight” new build, I’m running the HRV and watching the power bill. It’s a tradeoff, but I do miss just cracking a window sometimes.

I get what you mean—my old house was leaky enough that fresh air was never a problem, but now with all the insulation and sealed windows, I’m constantly thinking about humidity and CO2 levels. Have you noticed any issues with condensation or indoor air quality? I’m still figuring out the right HRV settings... sometimes I wonder if we’re trading one set of problems for another.
