Ventilation in new builds—are we overlooking something important?

I've definitely seen snow cause issues before. I remember inspecting a house a couple winters back where the homeowner complained about weird odors and moisture buildup inside. Climbed up to check the roof vents, and sure enough, they were buried under a solid foot of snow—completely blocked. Seems like builders sometimes underestimate just how much snow can pile up in certain areas... Maybe it's time they rethink vent placement or design for snowy climates.

Interesting point, but is it really practical to redesign vent placement for snow alone? I've managed properties in snowy regions for years, and honestly, regular maintenance usually solves this. Maybe the issue isn't so much the design itself but homeowners not realizing vents need clearing after heavy snowfall. Wouldn't educating homeowners or providing clearer guidelines on winter upkeep be a simpler fix than rethinking the entire vent system? Just a thought...

That's a fair point, regular maintenance does go a long way. Still, I wonder if there's a middle ground here—maybe not a complete redesign, but some minor adjustments to vent placement or protective covers could reduce how frequently homeowners need to clear them? I've seen firsthand how quickly vents can get blocked after a heavy snowstorm, and not everyone can safely access their roof to clear them promptly. Education is definitely key, but combining that with a slightly more snow-resilient design might save everyone some headaches down the line. Has anyone experimented with vent covers or slightly raised placements in snowy areas? Curious if it made a noticeable difference...

Yeah, totally agree. I've installed raised vents with angled covers on a couple houses in heavy snow areas—seems like it really cuts down on buildup. Not perfect, but definitely helps between clearings.

I've noticed the angled covers help too, but have you found any issues with airflow reduction? I had one job where we raised the vents slightly, and it definitely cut down on snow blockage...but I wondered if it impacted ventilation efficiency at all.
