Ventilation in new builds—are we overlooking something important?

I hear you on the double-checking—I've crawled through more attics than I care to admit, just to make sure vents weren't buried under insulation. One time after a hailstorm, I found three soffit vents completely blocked, and the homeowner had no clue why their attic was sweating. It's wild how often this gets missed, especially when crews are rushing. I get wanting to move fast, but skipping those details can end up costing way more down the line. Sometimes I wonder if it's a training thing or just folks not realizing how much damage poor ventilation can cause over time.

You’re spot on about how much gets missed when everyone’s in a hurry. I’ve had to pull back insulation myself after a new build, only to find the soffit vents were totally covered—no airflow at all. It’s not just a training issue, in my opinion; sometimes it’s just folks thinking “out of sight, out of mind.” I always tell people: check your attic after any work, even if it feels like overkill. A little time up there now can save you from mold headaches or warped rafters later.

That’s a good point—mold and structural issues are no joke. I’ve seen similar problems, especially when insulation crews don’t coordinate with the vent installers. Sometimes it’s not even about rushing, just a lack of communication between trades. Do you think pre-inspection checklists actually help, or do folks just pencil-whip them? I’m curious if anyone’s seen a system that really works to keep those vents clear without relying on luck or double-checking everything yourself.

Honestly, I’ve seen both. Some builders treat checklists like a box-ticking exercise, but when they’re actually used right, they can catch a ton of stuff—especially those blocked baffles or missing vent chutes. The problem is, unless someone really cares (or there’s accountability), things slip. I’ve started snapping photos during my walk-throughs just to have proof later... It’s not a perfect system, but it beats hoping everyone else did their job.

Checklists only go so far, honestly. I’ve seen people breeze through them without even looking up from their phones. Photos help, but if the crew’s just rushing to finish, stuff still gets missed. I almost wish there was a way to double-check airflow without tearing everything apart after.
