I tried to use my attic for storage once, just lightweight stuff, but even then I noticed a little flex in the trusses.

You’re not alone—first time I crawled up there with a box of Christmas lights, I swear I heard the house groan. I’ve seen folks try to beef up their trusses with extra lumber, but unless you’re ready to play engineer (and risk voiding warranties), it’s dicey. Had a neighbor get an actual engineer’s advice once, but the quote was almost as much as a backyard shed. Sometimes it’s just not worth pushing your luck...

That flex in the trusses is exactly why I gave up on attic storage, too. Even if it feels like you’re only adding a few boxes, that weight adds up fast, and most trusses just aren’t made for it. I’ve seen people try to reinforce them, but unless you really know what you’re doing, it’s risky—plus, there’s always the warranty issue hanging over your head. Sometimes it’s just better to play it safe and look for storage elsewhere.

You’re spot on about that flex—trusses just aren’t designed for a bunch of storage. I went through the same debate and finally decided to keep only the lightest holiday stuff up there, nothing heavy. It’s a pain not having extra space, but honestly, peace of mind is worth it. And yeah, messing with the structure or risking the warranty just didn’t sit right with me either. Sometimes it’s smarter to work with what you’ve got and look for other storage options.

I ran into this exact issue when I looked into installing a green roof a couple years ago. My trusses just couldn’t handle the extra load, even with lightweight soil. Ended up scrapping the idea—didn’t want to risk voiding the warranty or dealing with future sagging. It’s frustrating, but sometimes those structural limits are there for a reason... I just use my attic for insulation and a couple boxes of old clothes now.

That’s actually something I’ve been worried about too—my house uses rafters instead of trusses, and I keep reading conflicting things about how much extra weight they can handle. Did you ever look into whether retrofitting with sistered rafters or extra bracing would’ve worked, or was it just too much hassle? I’m curious if anyone’s managed to reinforce their roof for a project like this without spending a fortune.
