Figuring out roof support: choosing between rafters and trusses

I’ve wondered about converting trusses to rafters too, but every contractor I’ve talked to says it’s almost never worth the hassle unless you’re already gutting the whole roof. The engineering alone sounds like a nightmare, and I’d be worried about resale value if it’s not done perfectly. I ended up just adding some plywood decking between the truss webs for storage—definitely not glamorous, but it keeps the structure intact and my insurance company happy. Those prefab attic ladders are surprisingly sturdy, by the way.

Honestly, I think you made the right call. I’ve seen a neighbor try to convert trusses to rafters for more attic space, and it turned into a money pit—permits, engineers, endless inspections. Your approach is practical and safe. Plus, those prefab ladders are way sturdier than I expected too. Sometimes simple solutions really are best, even if they’re not flashy.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve watched folks sink thousands into “upgrading” their attic space, only to end up with headaches and a lighter wallet. I went the same route as you—plywood between trusses, nothing fancy, but it holds all my holiday junk just fine. Insurance peace of mind is worth way more than an extra few square feet, if you ask me.

- Totally get where you’re coming from.
- I did the same—just basic plywood, nothing fancy, and it’s held up for years.
- Honestly, I looked into converting to rafters for more space, but the cost vs. benefit just didn’t add up for me.
- My neighbor went all-in with a full attic remodel and now complains about creaks and weird drafts...
- Insurance was a big factor for me too—heard some companies get picky if you mess with the trusses.
- Sometimes I wonder if I’m missing out on extra storage, but then again, less stuff means less clutter, right?

You’re not alone second-guessing the storage thing—almost everyone I talk to debates it at some point. I’ve seen a lot of folks stick with basic plywood over trusses and honestly, it’s usually the most hassle-free route. The insurance angle is real too; I’ve had a couple of owners get tripped up by that after making changes. Sometimes less storage just means you’re forced to keep only what you really need, which isn’t always a bad thing. If it’s working for you and you’re not dealing with weird noises or drafts, that’s a win in my book.
