Ran into exactly this issue a couple years back when we wanted to switch from asphalt shingles to tile. The roof was trussed, and reinforcing it got pricey fast... wish I'd known to consider rafters earlier. Lesson learned, I guess!

Yeah, tile roofs can really catch people off guard with the extra weight. Did you end up needing additional support walls too, or was reinforcing the trusses enough to handle the load?

Yeah, it's easy to underestimate how quickly those costs pile up, especially when you're dealing with tile. Been there myselfβ€”thought trusses would save me money upfront, but ended up spending a chunk reinforcing them too. If you managed to get by without adding extra walls, that's actually pretty good. Sounds like you handled it well, even if it felt rough on the wallet at the time.

Yeah, that's a common misconception. Trusses seem like the budget-friendly option at first glance, but once you factor in heavier roofing materials like tile or slate, the reinforcement costs can really sneak up on you. I've inspected homes where homeowners had to retrofit additional bracing after installation, and it wasn't cheap. Did you end up needing any special engineering approvals for your reinforcement work, or was it straightforward enough to handle without extra paperwork?

When I reinforced mine, I didn't end up needing special engineering approvals, thankfully. But I did have a friend who's an engineer glance over my plans just to be safe... didn't want any surprises later on. Honestly, if I'd known upfront how much extra hassle and cost reinforcing would add, I might've reconsidered rafters from the start. Live and learn, right?
