- Definitely can relate—tight truss spacing can be a real headache for ventilation upgrades.
- Good point about engineered trusses holding up better under heavy materials like slate... seen that myself after storm damage repairs.
- It's always tricky balancing easy access for future maintenance with solid structural integrity.
- Sounds like you made the best of a tough situation, though. Nice work handling it!

Reading through this makes me wonder if I should've thought more about trusses before we redid our roof last summer. We went with rafters mostly because the contractor said it'd make attic access easier, but now I'm thinking about the extra strength of engineered trusses, especially after hearing about storm damage. Has anyone noticed a big difference in attic usability or storage space between the two? Feels like every decision leads to another question...

Honestly, I wouldn't stress too much about your choice. Rafters do have their perks, especially when it comes to attic usability. I've seen plenty of homes with rafters that weathered storms just fine—it's more about proper installation and maintenance than anything else. Engineered trusses are great for strength, sure, but they can really limit your attic space because of all those cross braces. My brother-in-law went with trusses, and now he's always complaining about how tricky it is to store anything larger than a suitcase up there.

If you're worried about storm damage, maybe focus on reinforcing connections or adding hurricane clips—those can make a huge difference without needing to rethink your whole roof structure. Every decision has trade-offs, and from what you've described, you probably made a solid choice for your needs.

Yeah, rafters can definitely hold their own if they're put in right. I've got rafters at my place, and honestly, they've been fine even through some nasty weather. The attic space is a huge plus too—can't imagine trying to cram stuff around all those truss braces. Like you said, reinforcing connections or throwing in some hurricane clips will probably give you peace of mind without breaking the bank. Sounds like you're on the right track already.

I've got rafters too, and honestly, the attic storage alone sold me on them. Trusses might be easier to install, but man, good luck squeezing your Christmas decorations around all those braces... Hurricane clips are definitely worth it though—cheap insurance for peace of mind.
