"Solar tubes might still be doable—less dramatic, but still decent natural light."

Yeah, solar tubes are actually pretty underrated. My neighbor put a couple in last summer after realizing skylights weren't an option with his trusses. At first, he was kinda skeptical they'd do much, but honestly, the difference was surprising. He joked that he no longer needed to turn on the bathroom lights during the day—said it felt like a mini sunbeam spotlighting his shower concerts, haha.

I get that rafters offer way more flexibility for customizing later on (been there myself), but if you're stuck with trusses, solar tubes can be a solid compromise. Plus, they're easier to install and less prone to leaks than traditional skylights. Might not have the same wow factor, but hey... natural light is natural light, right?

Haha, exactly. I've installed quite a few solar tubes over the years, and honestly, people are usually surprised by how much brightness they bring in. Sure, they're not as dramatic as a big skylight, but do you really need drama in your bathroom ceiling? Plus, fewer leaks and easier maintenance—what's not to like? Have you thought about placement yet? That can make a huge difference too.

Good point about placement. I've seen folks underestimate that and end up with weird shadows or uneven lighting. A friend of mine put one right above his shower—it looked great at first, but he said it felt like showering under a spotlight every morning, haha. He ended up shifting it slightly, and it made a huge difference. Definitely worth spending a bit of extra time figuring out exactly where it'll go.

Good lighting points...but circling back to rafters vs. trusses, remember that rafters give you more flexibility for placement adjustments later on. Learned this the hard way—trusses can limit your options if you're picky about lighting positions. Just something to keep in mind!

Couldn't agree more. Rafters definitely give you that wiggle room if you're particular about lighting or even ventilation placement. Another thing to think about is future renovations—rafters make it way easier to modify or reinforce later on. Trusses, while quick and cost-effective upfront, can seriously box you into a corner if your plans change (and trust me, they always do...). Seen too many homeowners regret not leaving themselves options down the road.
