Yeah, I hear you. I used to dream about a big attic for all my junk, but after last winter’s ice storm, I’m just happy my roof didn’t cave in. Trusses aren’t pretty, but neither is a surprise skylight in February. Guess I’ll keep my stuff in the garage and sleep easier.

Trusses might not win any beauty contests, but after seeing what heavy snow and ice can do, I’m not convinced the extra attic space is worth the risk. I looked into converting my garage rafters for storage, but even then, the load limits are pretty strict unless you reinforce everything. Honestly, I’d rather have a boring roof than deal with water stains or worse. Maybe if you’re in a milder climate, rafters make sense, but up north? I’ll take structural integrity over aesthetics any day.

- Trusses aren’t much to look at, but my wallet likes them. Cheaper up front, and I don’t have to worry every time it snows.
- Looked into rafter storage too—turns out, plywood and a few boxes can add up fast in weight. My neighbor’s ceiling actually sagged from overloading... not a great look.
- I’d love more attic space, but I’m not paying for a new roof just to store holiday decorations.
- Up here (Minnesota), I’ll take boring and sturdy over fancy any day. Less drama when the ice storms hit.

I get the “boring and sturdy” angle, but isn’t there something to be said for a bit of usable attic? I mean, trusses are solid, but those webs make crawling around up there feel like a jungle gym. My uncle went with rafters in his old farmhouse—yeah, he had to watch the load, but he could actually walk upright and store more than just dust bunnies. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d trade a little extra upfront cost for not having to play Tetris with my storage bins every winter... anyone else find trusses kinda limiting?

Trusses definitely eat up attic space with all those webs—makes it tough to use for much besides insulation and wires. I’m curious, though: has anyone here tried those attic trusses that leave a clear span in the middle? Wondering if they hold up as well in heavy snow areas like Minnesota...
