Why does picking between layering new shingles or ripping everything off have to be so confusing?

That’s exactly where I landed when I did mine last year—just couldn’t shake the feeling I’d regret not seeing what was under there. My house is pushing 80 years old, and the last thing I wanted was to cover up rot or some weird patch job from decades ago. But man, the cost difference is real. Did you notice any surprises when you pulled your old shingles? I found a spot where a squirrel had chewed right through the decking... never would’ve caught it if I’d just layered over. Sometimes the peace of mind is worth the extra hassle, even if it’s a pain in the wallet.

Pulled mine off a few years back and yeah, found some sketchy repairs from who-knows-when. There was a spot where the decking was basically dust. Cost stung, but I sleep better knowing it’s solid now. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet.

Man, I hear you on the cost. My wallet still cries a little when I look at the roof, but at least it’s not raining in my living room anymore. I was tempted to just slap another layer on and call it a day, but then I started thinking about all the “mystery repairs” hiding under there. Did you end up doing any of the work yourself, or did you just hand it all over to the pros? I keep wondering if DIY would’ve saved me enough to make the stress worth it...

I get the temptation to just layer over—seems quicker and cheaper up front, but you nailed it with “mystery repairs.” I’ve seen a lot of folks go that route and end up with hidden rot or leaks that cost way more down the line. DIY can save some cash, but tearing off a roof is no joke. Unless you’re really comfortable on a ladder and don’t mind surprises (and a sore back), sometimes handing it to the pros is just less stressful. Peace of mind’s worth a lot... especially when it rains sideways.

Yeah, I hear you on the “mystery repairs.” I’ve seen people just slap new shingles over old ones and think they’re saving money, but then a year or two later, they’re dealing with mold or soft spots. Plus, if you ever want to go solar or put in a green roof down the line, you really need a solid base—no shortcuts. It’s not fun tearing off layers, but at least you know what you’re working with. Sometimes the peace of mind is worth the extra weekend (and ibuprofen).
