Haha, yeah, squirrels seem to take hardware cloth as a personal challenge rather than a barrier. Had a similar issue when a family of mice decided my attic insulation was their new luxury condo. Ended up layering metal flashing with steel wool stuffed into every tiny crevice I could find. Been quiet up there since, but now every time the wind blows funny, I'm up on a ladder checking corners again...

Turned out to be raccoons having nightly wrestling matches up there. We ended up installing galvanized sheet metal along all the vulnerable edges and reinforced vent screens with aluminum mesh. Haha, squirrels really do hold grudges, don't they? Had a family of them move into our attic one winter—thought I'd outsmarted them by sealing the gap near the chimney. Nope. They chewed right through some nearby siding to get back in. Ended up having to set up a humane trap and relocate them miles away.
