I tried those foam inserts a couple years back—honestly, they were a mixed bag for me. Pine needles still got stuck on top and sort of matted down, so I was up there with a leaf blower anyway. Steep roof definitely made it trickier to keep them in place. As for insulation, I did the first layer myself (blown-in cellulose). Not the most fun weekend, but it did help with ice dams. If you’re not comfortable crawling around up there, might be worth at least getting a quote just to compare.

I hear you on those foam inserts—tried them myself and honestly, they didn’t live up to the hype for me either. Stuff still piled up, and I was back on the ladder more than I wanted. If you’re leaning DIY, have you looked into gutter guards made from recycled metal mesh? They’re pricier up front but way sturdier, and I found they handled pine needles a lot better. As for insulation, I’m all for doing it yourself if you’re comfortable, but safety’s a dealbreaker—steep roofs are no joke. Sometimes hiring out is worth it just for peace of mind, especially if you’re trying to keep things green and efficient.

I get the point about metal mesh guards being sturdier, but I’m not convinced they’re always the best fit. In my case, the recycled mesh clogged up with maple seeds and fine debris, so I still had to get up there a couple times a year. Maybe it depends on your tree situation? Also, about hiring out for insulation—cost was a huge factor for me. I ended up doing the attic myself with a rented blower and lots of prep. It took a weekend, but I felt better knowing exactly what materials went in. I get the safety concerns, though—steep roofs are a whole different ballgame.

- Totally get the DIY appeal—knowing what's in your attic insulation is a big plus.
- Mesh guards are hit or miss. Around here, pine needles jam them up fast, so I’m with you: depends on your trees.
- Safety’s no joke on steep roofs. If you handled it yourself and stayed safe, hats off. Not everyone’s comfortable with that.
- Costs add up quick with pros, but sometimes you just can’t beat the peace of mind... or keeping both feet on the ground.

I hear you on the mesh guards—mine clogged up with maple seeds last spring, so I ended up on the ladder anyway. I’ve always done my own gutter cleaning, but after slipping once (nothing serious), I started wondering if it’s worth the risk just to save a few bucks. Has anyone found a middle ground, like hiring someone just for the tough spots?
