Did you know shingles get layered like fish scales?

Fish scales is a pretty good way to describe it, honestly. Seen plenty of roofs where the “scales” start curling up like a fish outta water, especially on those low slopes. Shingles just don’t love sitting in puddles - water finds every little gap. I’ve patched more than a few where the wind got under the edges and started peeling them up. Metal’s loud, sure, but at least you’re not chasing leaks every spring. If you’re already seeing problems after one winter, might be worth checking if they used enough nails or if the underlayment’s doing its job. Sometimes it’s just the wrong material for the pitch, no matter how good the install was.

- That’s been my experience. My neighbor used architectural shingles on a low slope and had leaks the first year.
- Anyone try those synthetic shingles? Wonder if they hold up better on low pitches or if it’s just marketing.

That’s spot on. I see this all the time - folks put architectural shingles on a roof that’s too flat, and then wonder why they’re chasing leaks after the first big rain. Shingles just aren’t designed to shed water on low slopes. Water creeps under, especially with ice or wind-driven rain.

If you’re dealing with a low pitch, step one is always check the manufacturer’s minimum slope rating. Most asphalt shingles need at least a 4:12 pitch. Anything less, and you’re rolling the dice, no matter how careful the installer is.

About synthetic shingles - mixed bag, honestly. Some of the newer composites claim better performance on lower slopes, but I haven’t seen enough long-term data to trust them over tried-and-true options like modified bitumen or even standing seam metal. Marketing can make anything sound bulletproof, but real-world weather will tell the truth.

Metal’s noisy, sure, but if you want dry ceilings and fewer repairs, it’s hard to beat for low slopes. Just my two cents after crawling around a lot of attics with a flashlight...

- Gotta push back a bit on the metal for low slopes. Seen plenty of “dry ceilings” turn into drip zones when seams weren’t perfect or fasteners backed out.

- Modified bitumen’s not flashy, but it’s saved more than one flat roof I’ve worked on.
- Metal’s fine if you’re ready for the maintenance and don’t mind the noise during hail. Just saying, every system has its trade-offs...

That line hits home. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve crawled up into an attic after a big storm and found water trails under “guaranteed” metal panels. Thing is, I’ve also seen modified bitumen fail when the seams weren’t torched right or someone got lazy with the flashing. Every system’s got its weak spot.

I get the hesitation with metal on low slopes, but I’ve seen some standing seam jobs hold up for decades - provided the installer actually knew what they were doing. Fasteners backing out is a pain, but I’ve also seen shingle roofs on low slopes turn into a patchwork mess after a couple winters. Around here (Midwest), ice dams are the real test. Metal sheds snow better, but if you don’t have good insulation and ventilation, you’re still in trouble.

Noise during hail? Yeah, it’s loud, but I’ll take that over a soaked ceiling any day. Just my two cents - no perfect roof, just trade-offs and maintenance.
