Gotta admit though, sometimes I wonder if I’m just being paranoid when I’m up there with a flashlight after every gust of wind...

I get that feeling too, but honestly, it’s not paranoia if you’ve seen what a “minor” issue can turn into. Last fall, I thought a couple of lifted shingles were no big deal—figured I’d get to it later. Next rainstorm, water found its way in and warped half my bedroom ceiling. It’s wild how fast things go from “fine” to “expensive.” Sometimes I think the walk-arounds are overkill, but then again, drywall repairs aren’t cheap either.

Funny thing, I’ve seen folks ignore a tiny nail pop or a bit of flashing that looked “mostly fine,” and then a couple months later they’re dealing with mold or rot. Makes me wonder—how often do you all actually get up there and check things out? Is it just after storms, or do you have a set schedule? I always debate if I’m being too cautious, but then again, I’ve seen what happens when people aren’t.

I get where you’re coming from. When I bought my place last year, I didn’t even think about the roof until a buddy pointed out a missing shingle. Now, I check it every couple months—nothing fancy, just a quick look for popped nails or loose flashing, especially after heavy rain. It feels a bit much sometimes, but honestly, catching small stuff early saved me from a leak this spring. I’d rather feel too cautious than deal with water stains on the ceiling.

I hear you on the “feels a bit much” part, but honestly, I think most folks underestimate how fast a roof can go from fine to a disaster. I live in hail country and after one bad storm last year, my neighbor ignored a couple of cracked shingles—figured it was no big deal. Two months later? Water pouring into his attic during a downpour. Insurance barely covered half because he waited too long. I’d rather be the “paranoid” one up there with binoculars than deal with that mess.

Can’t argue with that logic. But do you ever wonder if some folks go overboard? I’ve seen people panic over a single lifted shingle, when it’s just cosmetic. Still, ignoring cracked ones after hail—yeah, that’s asking for trouble. Curious, did your neighbor have an older roof or was it just bad luck? Sometimes insurance gets real picky about “maintenance neglect.”
