Those thermal cameras really do make everything look like a scene from Predator, don’t they? I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to explain that a “hot spot” in the attic is just where someone’s cat or raccoon has been hanging out, not a sign of hidden water damage. Happens more than you’d think, especially in older houses with weird insulation patterns.

The “roof character” thing cracks me up. Some roofs are like a greatest hits album of every repair trend from the last 40 years—patches, mismatched shingles, you name it. Makes for some interesting reports. And yeah, pollen can look exactly like granule loss on photos, especially after a windy week. Midwest springs are brutal for that.

I get the skepticism about all the gadgets. Sometimes it does feel like overkill, but I’d rather flag something questionable than gloss over it and have someone find a real problem later. False alarms are annoying, but missing a leak or rot is way worse in the long run.

That’s my roof in a nutshell—like a patchwork quilt made by someone with no sense of color. I always wonder if all those “hot spots” on the thermal scan are just where the insulation’s given up or if it’s just my attic raccoon again. Has anyone actually saved money by catching something early with these gadgets, or is it mostly just peace of mind?

I totally get the patchwork quilt vibe—mine looks like a game of “guess which year this shingle is from.” I did catch a small leak early thanks to a thermal scan, but honestly, half the time it’s just the squirrels making things look weird. Peace of mind is nice, but sometimes it feels like I’m just paying for more stuff to worry about.

Thermal scans are a game changer for catching leaks early, but I hear you—sometimes it’s just wildlife stirring things up. Have you ever checked your attic insulation after one of those squirrel episodes? Sometimes the critters do more damage than the weather.

I get the hype around thermal scans, but honestly, I’ve seen them flag “hot spots” that turned out to be nothing but a raccoon nest or even just old insulation bunched up weird. Not saying they’re useless, but you still gotta get up there and look with your own eyes. Sometimes the tech makes folks worry more than they need to.
