just a bunch of infrared images with red and blue splotches—no legend, no context

I hear you. Had a client once who got a 40-page PDF like that—looked more like modern art than a roof report. I’ve noticed the same “rush job” vibe lately, especially after big storms roll through. Your idea about sample reports is spot on. If they can’t explain their own findings in plain English, it’s not worth the hassle.

I get what you’re saying—if I can’t make heads or tails of a report, it’s basically useless for making decisions or talking to owners. I’ve had inspectors send over stuff so technical it might as well be in another language. Do you ever push back and ask them to clarify, or just move on to someone else? Curious if anyone’s actually gotten a clear answer from these “sci-fi” reports...

I’ve definitely pushed back—if I’m paying for a report, I expect to actually understand it. Sometimes they’ll clarify, but honestly, a few just double down on the jargon. I’ve switched inspectors before over this exact thing. If they can’t explain it in plain English, I don’t trust their recommendations.

- Had a similar experience last year—got a 15-page PDF with more acronyms than actual sentences.
- Roof is asphalt shingle, about 18 years old, and I just wanted to know if it’d survive another winter. Instead, I got “differential granular loss” and “localized substrate delamination.” No clue what that meant for my wallet or my living room ceiling.

- Ended up calling the guy and asking him to walk me through it like I was five. He seemed annoyed, but eventually explained it was just some wear and tear, not urgent. Still, made me question how much of the report was just fluff.

- Switched inspectors next time. The new one literally drew diagrams on a napkin for me—way more helpful. Didn’t feel dumb asking questions either.

- I get that they have to cover themselves legally, but if I can’t understand what’s wrong, how am I supposed to fix it? Not everyone’s a contractor.

- Honestly, if someone can’t explain things in plain English, I start wondering if they’re hiding something or just don’t know themselves. Maybe that’s harsh, but after dealing with leaks and insurance claims before...I need straight answers.

- For what it’s worth, found that smaller local outfits tend to be better at this than big companies. They want the repeat business.

- Anyone else notice these reports keep getting longer every year? Last one had drone photos and thermal imaging—cool tech, but I still just want to know: do I need a new roof or not?

Yeah, I hear you. My last report had so many fancy terms, I felt like I needed a decoder ring just to figure out if I should be worried or not. All I really want is a straight answer—can my roof handle another winter, or am I about to drop a few grand? The tech is neat, but unless those drone pics come with a translation, it’s just more stuff to stress over. Local guys seem to get it—they know we’re not all roof nerds.
