The black streaks on my asphalt shingles are coming back after a previous cleaning. They’re most noticeable on the shaded side of the roof and near the gutters. The staining looks flat rather than like raised moss, but I’m not sure whether some of it could be lichen or permanent discoloration.

Before having it cleaned again, what would you check first? Could runoff from an untreated section, dirty gutters, or nearby trees be contributing, or is persistent shade and slow drying usually the bigger reason it returns?

I’m also curious whether it makes sense to test a small area first and whether zinc or another preventative treatment is worthwhile after cleaning. For anyone who has dealt with recurring streaks, how long did the results of the second treatment last?

Climbed up there (carefully, lol) and replaced them, but figured I should probably do something to prevent it next time. Ended up adding some roofing adhesive under the edges of the ones that looked iffy, checked for loose nails, and trimmed back some branches that were scraping around. Seems okay now, but um...anyone got better tricks or something else I should try?

Okay, random thought experiment here...let's say you wake up tomorrow morning after a pretty rough storm overnight. You head outside with your coffee, look up, and uh-oh...a few of your shingles are looking crooked or even missing entirely. Now, I know shingles aren't exactly cheap or fun to replace (been there, done that, sadly), so I'm curious what everyone else does to prep their roofs for bad weather. Do you guys have any kind of routine or checklist you follow to make sure your shingles stay put? Or maybe some DIY tricks you've figured out over the years to keep everything secure and save yourself a headache later? Honestly, I usually just cross my fingers and hope for the best, but that's probably not the smartest strategy, haha.

I was painting my porch railings yesterday, and of course, halfway through the job, I checked the weather app and saw rain was on its way. Typical luck, right? Anyway, I rushed to finish up and then started wondering how long paint actually needs to dry before it can handle a bit of rain without getting ruined.

Here's what I did: first, I quickly finished applying the coat evenly (as best as I could in a hurry), then set up a fan nearby to speed things along. After about an hour or so, the surface felt dry enough to touch lightly without smudging. But since it was outdoor paint, I figured it might be okay even if not fully cured yet.

Luckily, the rain held off for about 4 hours total. This morning everything looks fine - no streaks or weird spots - but now I'm curious if there's a better way to handle this situation next time. Maybe some trick or product that helps speed drying or protect fresh paint from sudden showers? Has anyone else dealt with this kinda thing before?
