I’d qualify the “usually pays off big-time” point a bit. A professional inspection is valuable, but it isn’t a guarantee that hidden damage has been found. Inspectors generally report on accessible areas and won’t open drywall, move insulation extensively, or lift roofing materials unless that’s specifically arranged and permitted.

The report should make those limitations clear. If there are ceiling stains, musty odors, questionable wiring, or foundation concerns, treat them as reasons for targeted follow-up by a roofer, electrician, structural engineer, or other specialist. A DIY walkthrough is useful alongside the inspection, especially for noting symptoms and asking questions, but neither approach should be treated as proof that concealed areas are sound.
