metal vs shingles for rainy climates - what holds up better?

Been looking into roofing options lately since my current roof is starting to show its age (and the leaks are getting annoying, you know?). Torn between metal roofing and asphalt shingles. Metal seems pricier upfront but supposedly lasts way longer and handles heavy rain better. Shingles are cheaper and easier to replace, but I've heard mixed things about durability in constant wet weather. Curious if anyone here has experience with either type in a rainy area and which you'd recommend?

Metal roofs definitely handle heavy rain better in my experience - especially if you're dealing with storms or wind-driven rain. Shingles can be fine, but once they start aging, the leaks come quicker than you'd think. Had a neighbor switch to metal after years of patching shingles, and he swears by it now. Have you thought about noise levels though? Some people find metal roofs louder during heavy downpours...might be worth considering if that's something that could bug you.

Metal roofs definitely have the edge when it comes to durability in heavy rain, no doubt. But honestly, the noise thing isn't as dramatic as some folks think - especially if you've got decent insulation or attic space. Had a customer jokingly complain he missed the "rain-on-tin-roof" sound after we insulated his attic properly, lol. So yeah, metal's great, just don't skimp on the insulation if you're sensitive to noise...or nostalgic for old-school rainy day vibes.

Interesting points, but I'm curious - are we maybe overselling metal roofs a bit here? Don't get me wrong, metal roofs are solid, especially in heavy rain. But shingles aren't exactly fragile either, right? I've seen plenty of properly installed asphalt shingle roofs handle years of heavy downpours without issues.

Also, about the noise thing...I get that insulation helps a ton, but isn't it fair to say that some people genuinely find metal roofs louder regardless? I had a homeowner once who insisted on metal because he loved the idea of hearing rain at night. After installation (and decent insulation), he was actually disappointed it wasn't louder. On the flip side, another customer was super sensitive to noise and regretted going metal even with extra insulation. So maybe it's more subjective than we're making it sound?

And what about hail or debris during storms - anyone have thoughts on how shingles vs metal hold up there? I've seen metal roofs dent pretty noticeably after hailstorms, and while shingles can lose granules or crack, repairs tend to be simpler and cheaper. Just something else to consider if you're in an area prone to severe weather.

Bottom line: both options have their pros and cons depending on your priorities. Metal's durability is great, but shingles aren't exactly weak sauce either. Maybe it's less about one being clearly better and more about what trade-offs you're comfortable with...?
