I get your point about silicone washers potentially compressing over time, but have you considered how stainless steel-backed washers might react with different roofing materials? I've seen cases where metal-on-metal contact led to corrosion issues, especially in coastal areas or places with heavy rainfall. Maybe worth double-checking compatibility before going all-in on stainless steel-backed washers... Could save some headaches down the road.

Good point about corrosion—I've seen metal washers cause issues near the coast too. Maybe EPDM-backed washers could be a safer bet? They're pretty durable and less reactive with different roofing materials... might be worth looking into.

EPDM-backed washers are definitely a solid choice, especially near coastal areas. I've seen them hold up surprisingly well against salt spray and humidity. But I'd also suggest considering stainless steel fasteners with EPDM washers—combining the two can really boost durability. Stainless steel resists corrosion better than standard galvanized options, and paired with EPDM, it's a pretty reliable combo.

One thing to keep in mind, though: installation matters a lot. Even the best materials can fail prematurely if they're overtightened or installed incorrectly. I've seen roofers crank down washers so tight that the EPDM splits or compresses too much, letting water seep in over time. So, proper torque and careful installation are just as important as choosing the right materials.

Also, don't underestimate regular inspections after heavy storms. Catching minor issues early—like slightly loosened fasteners or minor corrosion—can save you a ton of headaches later on.

Had a roofer buddy help me redo my metal roof last summer, and he swore by stainless steel fasteners with EPDM washers. I was skeptical at first (mostly because of the price tag, lol), but after a year of coastal storms, they're holding up great. He did warn me about overtightening—said he's seen washers squished flatter than pancakes, letting water sneak in. Glad I listened, because my DIY skills are...questionable at best.

- Stainless fasteners with EPDM washers are solid, no argument there.
- Seen plenty of cheaper screws rust out after just a few seasons, especially near saltwater.
- But honestly, overtightening is a bigger issue than most DIYers realize... seen washers split or flatten to uselessness more times than I can count.
- Good call trusting your buddy—sometimes the pricier option saves headaches down the road.
