"I've seen cases where adding some tapered insulation under a new membrane roof did wonders for drainage without having to mess with the structural slope itself."

Yeah, tapered insulation can be a lifesaver, but honestly, sometimes it's just putting lipstick on a pig. Had a buddy who went that route—worked great at first, but after a couple of heavy storms, pooling came back with a vengeance. If you're already spending decent money, might as well bite the bullet and fix the slope properly. Otherwise, you're just kicking the can down the road...

Yeah, tapered insulation can help in a pinch, but it's really just a temporary patch. Had a similar issue at a property I manage—thought we were good until winter hit. Honestly, better off addressing the underlying slope issue properly and saving yourself headaches down the line.

Couldn't agree more with this. Tapered insulation is like putting duct tape on a leaky boat—might get you through a weekend, but sooner or later you're swimming again. Had a client last year who insisted on using it to avoid dealing with the slope issue. Sure enough, first big storm rolled in, and guess who was calling me at 2 AM with water pouring into their living room?

On the shingles vs. metal debate after heavy rain, I've seen both sides of that coin. Shingles are cheaper upfront and easier to patch up when problems pop up, but metal roofing... man, if installed right, it's practically bulletproof. I've seen metal roofs shrug off storms that would've shredded shingles like confetti.

The thing about metal though—installation quality is everything. Had one property owner who went for a budget metal roof install from some fly-by-night crew. Looked nice at first glance, but the flashing and seams were sloppy as heck. First heavy rainstorm turned his attic into an indoor swimming pool. Not pretty.

So yeah, metal roofs can be fantastic, but don't cheap out on the install or you'll regret it big time. And whatever you do, fix that slope issue properly first. Otherwise you're just throwing good money after bad...

True, but honestly, shingles aren't always confetti either. Had mine for 15 years through some nasty storms—still holding strong. Metal's great, but sometimes feels like overkill (and over-budget) for regular homes... just my two cents.

Fair points on both sides. Metal roofs can definitely hold up, but I've seen plenty of shingle roofs push past 20 years if they're maintained right—good ventilation, regular inspections, prompt repairs when needed. Curious though, anyone had experience with synthetic shingles lately? Worth the hype or nah?
