roofing confusion - what goes under the shingles anyway?

So I'm trying to get my head around this roofing stuff because we're planning to redo ours soon. I thought it was just shingles and wood underneath, but apparently there's like felt paper, membranes, insulation, and who knows what else. Um, is all that really necessary or can you skip some of it? Seems like a lot of layers (and money), you know. Anyone have experience with this?
