ROOF DAMAGE DILEMMA: ASPHALT VS METAL, WHICH IS BETTER FOR INSURANCE CLAIMS?

Good point about the noise factor—I noticed that too when I switched to metal. But honestly, after adding some decent insulation in the attic, it cut down the sound quite a bit. Now it's more of a gentle background hum during storms, which I actually find kinda relaxing. Definitely beats the anxiety of checking the yard for shingles after every gusty night...

I totally get what you're saying about the noise. When we replaced our old asphalt roof with metal, I was initially worried about the same thing. To keep costs down (budget was tight at the time), I did some research and ended up tackling the attic insulation myself. It wasn't too complicated—just rolling out batts of insulation between the joists and making sure everything fit snugly. Took me a weekend, but the difference was pretty noticeable right away. Now it's just a soft patter during rainstorms, nothing harsh or annoying.

Honestly, I sleep better knowing I don't have to deal with shingles blowing off anymore. Insurance-wise, it’s been less stressful too. We used to file claims every couple years because of storm damage, but since switching to metal, that's been a non-issue. So yeah, the upfront cost was a bit higher, but between fewer insurance headaches and DIY-ing some improvements, it's definitely paid off in peace of mind—and wallet savings too.

- Good points about the insulation, did something similar myself and it definitely helps with noise.
- Curious though, has anyone had issues with hail damage on metal roofs? Heard mixed things about dents and insurance coverage...
- Our asphalt roof took a beating last storm, so I'm weighing options. Metal sounds great for wind, but hail's got me hesitating a bit.

Had the same hesitation myself, but honestly, after switching to metal, hail hasn't been as big an issue as I expected. Sure, we got a few minor dents last spring, but insurance covered it without hassle... way easier than our old asphalt roof claims.

I'm still on asphalt myself, first-time homeowner here, and honestly the hail claims haven't been too bad yet. But I'm curious about the metal roof process—did you have to document the dents yourself before calling insurance, or did they send someone out right away? Just trying to get a clear picture of how smoothly things actually go when hail hits metal...
