Not sure if it’s worth upgrading the fabric or just making drain checks part of my spring routine.

I’ve wondered the same. Did you use the fabric with a root barrier rating? I read some of the cheaper stuff isn’t really designed for aggressive roots. Curious if anyone’s had better luck with the pricier options.

I hear you on the fabric. I went with the mid-range stuff last year, thinking it’d be fine, but I’m already seeing a few roots poking through. Not sure the pricier roll would’ve solved it, but now I’m leaning toward making drain checks a regular thing too. The “root barrier” label can mean a lot of things... some are just thicker, not necessarily better at stopping aggressive roots. If you’ve got anything like bamboo nearby, I’d say don’t risk the cheap stuff.

- Seen a lot of “root barrier” products fail after a couple seasons, especially if you get heavy storms—water finds any weak spot and roots follow.
- I’d double-check how your drainage layers are holding up after big rains. Sometimes it’s not just the fabric, but how water pools and moves.
- Curious—are you using modular trays or a full layered system? I’ve noticed the tray setups sometimes make it easier to spot trouble early.

- Not sure I totally agree about root barriers always failing. I used a thicker HDPE sheet (not the fabric kind) and after 4 years, no root intrusion yet—even after some nasty downpours.

That’s spot on. I found pooling near the drains was a bigger issue than roots for me. Cheap fix was adding a few more gravel pockets.
- Went with a full layered system since trays seemed pricier up front. Downside: harder to check for issues without pulling up a chunk of the roof... but less plastic waste, which mattered to me.

I’m still wrapping my head around all these layers and barriers—feels like building a lasagna on my roof. I went with the fabric root barrier (mostly because it was cheaper and I was already over budget), but now I’m wondering if that’s gonna bite me in a few years. Anyone else get nervous about not being able to check under the layers without basically playing roof Jenga? Also, those gravel pockets sound way easier than what I did... which was panic and try to mop up puddles during the last storm.
