I hear you on the weather gamble—spring in my area is all over the place, and those green coatings can be pretty picky about humidity and temp swings. But honestly, I’ve found that if you stick to the manufacturer’s temp guidelines and really prep the surface right, most of the newer eco options hold up just as well as the old-school stuff. I get that backup stash though... I used to keep a can of solvent-based around for emergencies too. Still, I’ve had fewer callbacks since switching to low-VOC. The hand-check method—totally agree, sometimes your senses are more reliable than any digital readout.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing with low-VOC coatings—surface prep really is half the battle. I still get nervous when the forecast shifts last minute, though. Had one job where a surprise cold snap messed up my cure time... lesson learned. The hand-check’s saved me more than once.

Yeah, that hand-check trick has saved me a couple times too—especially when the weather app says one thing and the sky does another. I’ve found with low-VOC stuff, if temps drop even a little, it can throw off the whole cure. I started keeping a cheap IR thermometer in my kit just to double-check surface temps before I commit. It’s not perfect, but it’s caught a few close calls. Prep’s huge, but timing’s right up there too.

I get the whole IR thermometer thing, but honestly, I’ve had mixed results with those on darker surfaces—sometimes the readings are all over the place. I’m more in the camp of trusting the material’s feel and watching dew points. Weather apps can’t predict microclimates, especially if you’ve got a green roof or a lot of thermal mass up there. Timing’s important, but I’d argue material choice matters just as much, especially if you’re aiming for longevity and sustainability.

That’s something I hadn’t really thought about until we moved in here. Our roof is just standard asphalt, but even then, the temp differences across it are wild—especially after a sunny day. I tried one of those IR thermometers too, and it was kind of all over the place. I’m with you on trusting your hands and just paying attention to how things feel.

I’ve been stressing about timing repairs because the weather is so unpredictable, but your point about material choice really hits home. Did you do much research before picking your materials? I keep second-guessing if I should’ve gone with metal or something more eco-friendly, but the price difference was a lot for us.

Curious if you’ve noticed any difference in how your roof handles moisture or heat since you tackled that edging. I’m always worried about condensation and leaks, especially since our attic isn’t the best ventilated.
