has anyone tried those newer composite or PVC-based trims and flashings? I see them advertised as “coastal tough,” but I’m skeptical.
We used PVC trim on a shed right by the dunes last year. No rust, but it does get a little chalky and faded from the sun. Still, way less hassle than chasing rust stains. Stainless is still king for fasteners though—haven’t found a shortcut there yet. As for rinsing, I always mean to do it... but then I remember how much I hate dragging hoses around roofs.
PVC trim held up better than I expected for us, too. It definitely fades, but honestly, I’ll take that over the headache of rust every time. I do wish it looked a bit less plasticky, especially after a couple years in the sun. Stainless fasteners are pricey, but I’ve had regular screws seize up so badly from salt that it’s just not worth skimping. Dragging the hose up there for rinsing? Yeah... never happens here either.
I get what you mean about the PVC trim looking kind of fake after a while. I was on the fence about it for our place, but honestly, every time I see rust stains running down someone’s siding from regular fasteners, I feel a little better about the plastic look. The fading bugs me, though—ours went from bright white to this weird yellowish tint in just three summers. I tried one of those “restorer” products and it helped a bit, but not perfect.
Totally agree on stainless being expensive, but I learned the hard way that anything else just turns into a mess. Had to replace half the screws on our deck railings last year because they basically welded themselves in place from all the salt air. It’s wild how fast it happens.
As for rinsing things off... yeah, in theory it sounds good, but who’s actually dragging a hose up a ladder every month? Not me. I’m starting to think maybe there’s no perfect solution near the ocean—just gotta pick your battles and budget for replacements more often than you’d like.
That yellowing on PVC trim is so frustrating. Ours started out looking crisp, but after a couple summers, it’s like the sun and salt just tag-teamed it. I tried scrubbing with a magic eraser and it helped a bit, but it’s never quite the same as new. Still, I’d rather deal with that than rusty streaks everywhere—those are impossible to hide.
Stainless fasteners are pricey, but I learned my lesson with the cheap ones too. Had to pry out a bunch of corroded screws from our porch steps last fall. They were basically fused in there. I get why people say to rinse everything, but honestly, I barely keep up with mowing the yard, let alone hosing down the house every month.
It really does feel like you’re just picking the least annoying problem. I guess the upside is, at least the ocean view makes up for the hassle... most days, anyway.
I get the frustration with yellowed PVC, but honestly, I’d take a little rust over that faded plastic look any day. At least with metal, you can sand and repaint if you’re motivated, but once PVC gets that dingy tint, it’s pretty much baked in. I’ve actually started using painted wood trim in a few spots—costs less up front, and if it gets rough, I just slap on another coat. Not perfect, but it’s easier on the wallet and doesn’t look half bad if you keep up with it. Rinsing everything sounds great in theory, but who’s got time for that every month?
