ROOF SURVIVED HURRICANE, BUT WAS IT JUST LUCK?

That's great news your roof held up so well. Did you install it yourself or hire someone? I remember when mine survived a heavy storm, I was convinced it was just luck, but turns out the extra effort sealing around flashing and vents really paid off. Have you checked your attic yet for any sneaky leaks or moisture spots? Might be worth a quick look just to ease your mind...

Sounds like your prep work really paid off. Did you use any special materials around the flashing, or just standard sealant? I've found that checking the attic afterward is definitely worth the effort—caught a tiny leak once that way before it turned into something bigger. Might seem tedious, but better safe than sorry... Anyway, glad your roof made it through in good shape.

Yeah, checking the attic is one of those things people skip, but it really does save headaches later. About the flashing—honestly, I’ve had better luck using a high-quality butyl tape under the metal and then topping with standard sealant. It’s a bit more work upfront, but it holds up better when the wind really picks up. Glad your prep paid off, though. Sometimes it feels like overkill until you see what happens to the houses that don’t bother...

- Good call on the attic check—most folks skip it, but it’s where you spot the first signs of trouble.
- Butyl tape under flashing is a solid move. I’ve seen too many jobs where folks just slap on sealant and hope for the best. That tape gives you a real buffer when the wind starts testing things.
- Prepping always feels like overkill until you see what happens to the neighbor who didn’t bother. I’ve inspected roofs after storms where one house is bone dry and the next has buckets catching drips in every room.
- Not sure I’d call it luck if your roof held up. More like good planning and a bit of sweat equity.
- Only thing I’d add: keep an eye on those fasteners over time. Even with good tape and sealant, they can work loose after a few seasons of wild weather.
- If you’re ever second guessing whether it was worth the extra effort, just remember—no one ever regrets being too careful when the next storm rolls through.

You did it right. That’s what counts.

I get the point about planning and prep, but I do think luck still plays a part sometimes. You can do everything right and still get hit by debris or just catch a weird gust. My roof’s new, all the right materials, but after that last storm, my neighbor’s place two doors down lost half his shingles—same build, same year. Sometimes it’s just where the wind decides to hit hardest.
