- Insurance discounts for roof upgrades? Pretty much a coin toss.
-

“Didn’t even ask about attic insulation or ventilation.”
— Same here, which is wild. You’d think they’d care about stuff that actually makes your roof last longer.
- Cool roofs: I swear by them, but yeah, upfront cost is no joke unless you’re baking in the Southwest. In the Midwest, probably better to just boost insulation like you said.
- Ventilation’s great for shingle life and comfort, but my bills barely moved either. Maybe more of a long-game thing than instant savings.
- At least all this maintenance means fewer headaches (and buckets) when it rains... which is more than I can say for my neighbors’ leaky old roofs.

Not sure I’d write off cool roofs in the Midwest so quickly. I get that insulation’s a solid bet, but I’ve seen reflective membranes make a difference even up here—especially on low-slope roofs or older homes that just can’t get enough insulation packed in. Yeah, upfront cost stings, but if you’re already re-roofing, the incremental price isn’t always that wild. Plus, less heat cycling means shingles last longer, which insurance should care about... but apparently doesn’t. Go figure.

I’ve wondered the same about insurance—my last adjuster barely glanced at the new white membrane I put on. Didn’t budge my premium, even though my attic’s way cooler now. Maybe they just don’t factor in roof longevity unless it’s a total replacement? Feels like a missed opportunity.
