I hear you on the “maintenance-light” thing. Same deal when I swapped my RO system for UF membranes. I figured I’d be done with constant filter changes, but nope—still gotta rinse out the UF every so often or it clogs up with gunk. The upside is, at least I don’t have to deal with the waste water from RO anymore. It’s less hassle, just not zero hassle. Anyone who says otherwise probably hasn’t cleaned one after a year of hard water...
“Anyone who says otherwise probably hasn’t cleaned one after a year of hard water...”
That’s the part that gets me. I keep hearing “set it and forget it” with UF, but after a few months on well water, mine looked like a science experiment gone wrong. Rinsing is easier than swapping RO filters, sure, but I still end up elbow-deep in gunk every couple months. Has anyone actually managed to go a full year without cleaning? Or is that just marketing talk?
I’ve never seen a UF membrane go a year on untreated well water without some serious buildup. We’re on hard water too, and after about four months, the fouling is pretty visible—biofilm, mineral scale, you name it. Maybe if someone’s pre-filtering aggressively or dosing with anti-scalants, it’s possible? But I’d love to know if anyone’s actually tracked the performance drop over time. Also curious if anyone’s tried periodic chemical cleaning instead of just rinsing—does that make a difference long-term?
I switched to UF last year after fighting with my RO setup for ages, but I’m with you—on untreated well water, the buildup’s a pain. I tried just rinsing at first, but honestly, it didn’t cut it. Ended up doing a light citric acid soak every few months, and that actually kept the flow decent for almost a year. Pre-filters helped a bit, but if you’ve got hard water, you’ll still see some crud, no matter what. The chemical clean definitely made a bigger difference than just flushing with water.
