Green roofs are definitely cool in theory, but yeah, the maintenance can be a bit of a pain. My neighbor put one in last year—looked amazing at first, but after a few months, it started looking like a rooftop jungle. He eventually hired someone to handle it, but I think he underestimated how quickly weeds and random plants can take over.

Ice and water shields are a great suggestion too. I've seen them save homeowners from some pretty nasty leaks during heavy storms. Another thing I'd add is checking your gutters regularly. It sounds super basic, but you'd be surprised how many people overlook it. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up under your shingles or even overflow into your walls, which is never fun to deal with.

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned yet: storm shutters or impact-resistant windows. If you're in an area prone to hurricanes or severe windstorms, these can be lifesavers (literally). My sister lives down in Florida, and after she upgraded her windows, she said the difference during storms was night and day. Not only did it protect her home better, but it also cut down on noise significantly.

Speaking of extreme weather protection, has anyone here tried spray foam insulation in their attic? I've heard mixed reviews—some swear by it for sealing out moisture and drafts, while others say it's pricey and tricky to install properly. Curious if anyone's had firsthand experience with it...

I looked into spray foam insulation last year when we were renovating our attic. The sealing and moisture protection sounded great, but the quotes we got were pretty steep. Ended up going with blown-in cellulose instead—cheaper and easier to DIY. Seems to do the job so far, but I'm curious if spray foam really makes a noticeable difference during extreme weather events...

We went with spray foam about three years ago, and honestly, it's been pretty impressive during heatwaves and cold snaps. But yeah, the upfront cost stung a bit—my wallet still hasn't forgiven me... Sounds like cellulose is working fine for you though, so that's great.

- Spray foam sounds tempting, but yeah, the price tag makes me hesitate...
- Been using cellulose myself—wallet-friendly and decent insulation so far.
- Curious though, have you noticed any long-term maintenance issues with spray foam?
- Always wondered if the upfront cost balances out eventually with lower energy bills.
- Still weighing options here before next winter hits.
